When one thinks of torpedoes he usually
envisions the long, self-propelled torpedoes that are launched from submarines or Navy torpedo
bombers. Pyrotechnic torpedoes are entierly different, being small round globes that are similar to
cherry bombs but which explode on impact rather than when ignited by a fuse. There are two types of
pyrotechnic torpedoes: fulminate torpedoes and globe torpedoes. The former are extremely touchy and
can even explode when squeezed in the fingers, so we will concentrate our attention on the safer
globe torpedo. To make globe torpedoes, make some paper-mache half globes 1" to 2"
diameter, just as if you were making cherry bombs. Partially fill one half of a globe with some
small pebbles and potassium chlorate. Partially fill the other half with pebbles and equal parts of
sulfur, charcoal dust and pyrotechnic grade aluminum. Glue the two halves together and dip the globe
in paste until it becomes wet. Remove it and wrap it in string, then dip it again. Remove it and set
it aside to dry. When it is dry, repeat the operation as many times as necessary until a strong case
is formed. The finished torpedo will explode when thrown hard against a wall, sidewalk or other hard
brick or concrete surface. Stand well away from the impact area, as the explosion will scatter the
pebbles in every direction with enough force to blind an eye should a pebble strike one.
