I am interested in learning how to deactivate radio frequency tags for EAS systems.

Is it realistic to try to recreate the deactivation pad in a handheld device?
I haven't had any luck finding out what makes the pads work, and why they need to be plugged in (maybe i just haven't looked hard enough)

I know there are some types of handheld deactivators, but the few i've seen online are pricey.

I am familiar with the magic bag, I am looking for an alternative.
