Don't know about the US, but is Aust, refusing to take a breath test is regarded as having tested over the limit, and you're charged as a worst-category drink driver.

The alcohol in your blood enters the air in your lungs and is expelled when you blow. It doesn't matter if your mouth is completely clean, your BAC is still detectable in your expelled air.

Not really a way of beating the machine but a tactic that might work.
1. This will result in your arrest for destruction of property and probably assault on the cop holding the breathalyzer. Both lock-up offenses.

2. They will have plenty of machines, possibly a spare in the car. At most it will buy you the time it takes to get back to the station. In Aust they can test you after an arrest, then calculate your BAC at the time you were driving, and you will be charged at that level.
