If it starts to curl or shrink you have way too much lye. Try cutting the lye down a bit and also make sure you mix the lye well before you drop your bill in it. The security strip doesn't matter if you are doing '93 series bills and earlier. They don't have security strips. But it sounds like you are rubbing way too hard. Do it very gentle. That's why with bills of that age ('93 and older) as long as you got the feel test passed your pretty good. But if you pass the feel test and the pen test at the register. Your 100% good they will take it. Go for making '93 bills and earlier that are still in circulation.
