I agree about it being blow out of proportion. And random, great explanation!
Now heres my take, the more people are scared out the ass, the more they are prepared. But remember y2k? Big hype, right? Everyone was "prepared". And what happened? NOTHING!. But it was better to be prepared than screwed. Same thing here. Be prepared for the worst, even if you think it wont happen.
