Depending on the situations I suggest one of the following
}Waistband trick- Wear athletic shorts that are tight on the waist (not too tight, you could look gay. Unless thats your thing, that is) and slip whatever it is inbetween your underwear and skin. Good for smaller things
}Put it back method-Take it, walk up to the cashier, ask how much it is. Look sad and disappointed when they say however much it is, go put it back. Once you get back to wherever it was (try to have your back to the guy) slip it into your waistband or pocket.
}Buddies in crime- One guy blocks the line of sight of the cashier. Works best in stores with 1 person.
