Drinking is a habit-forming activity, whether you believe that or not. While children might be exposed to no worse physical symptoms than adults do as a result of drinking (yes, it does fuck with your head at higher constant levels of drinking), they don't have the life experience to be in a position to make a decision about how much they should drink and how often.
Without that life experience, they don't understand the risks of falling into a drinking habit at that age, or how easily it can happen. An adult is expected to have more experience, but doesn't always have it - the best that society can do, it seems, is to put a blanket age on drinking and to hope for the best.
Whether it is a part of life or not, drinking does cause damage, and people need to make the decision for themselves whether to inflict that damage or not; and a child simply doesn't have the experience or wisdom to make that decision with respect to the consequences.

I didn't start drinking young, but I know that I didn't know anything about the effects of (serious) drinking or the risks and effects of addiction then. Nor when I was 15, or 17. Had I started drinking then, I would be a lost cause now.

See the similarity?

I don't wanna fight with ya cuz but it just pissed me off to read that your preaching that buying the occasional carton for a young fella is ABSOLUTE evil due to addiction?
Mate when i was a little one i didnt drink every weekend, never found the urge to get drunk just to get "off" and i smoke bongs rather than drink. But i was a Heavy drinker. Many kids around here drink due to birthdays, winning NRL comp, occasional Party and its like 24 cans bottles to 2-4 kids.

Originally Posted by S7@1T3D I don't wanna fight with ya cuz but it just pissed me off to read that your preaching that buying the occasional carton for a young fella is ABSOLUTE evil due to addiction? | You know, you're reading far too much into what I say. So far, in fact, that you're misconstrueing what I'm saying.
I don't consider underage drinking to be absolute evil. I do, however, consider a regular habit of drinking to be a bad thing for someone under the age of 18 (to use a blanket age), for the reasons mentioned in my previous post. Limited drinks on occasion are fine - they may even be healthy - but I'm not talking about limited drinks on occasion, I'm talking about regular medium-to-heavy drinking. Quote: |
Originally Posted by S7@1T3D Mate when i was a little one i didnt drink every weekend, never found the urge to get drunk just to get "off" and i smoke bongs rather than drink. | That's great. Good for you. But you clearly aren't in the group of children that I am concerned about. As with regular drinking, I don't support heavy drinking while underage either (even at my age and level of drinking, I still hate making myself physically sick from my drinking), but that's not the issue we're addressing here.
My concern is with regard to regular medium-to-heavy drinking while underage, not with occasional drinks. This discussion is off-topic though, so if you would like to continue this discussion further, start a new thread and we can continue there.
This thread is about "caffeine/alcohol energy drinks". Posts after this post must be on this topic, or they will be deleted.

I also know some fellas around my town that wake-up to 12 stubbies by 1pm.
Now i know you are gonna say something about kids growing up to be those guys who drink 12 by 1pm or something on how those guys got that way. Well I'm sorry but if you are alco, junkie, pothead or E head you should know Wat you getting your self into and how it affects you.
I don't expect my dealer to go nah man I'm not gonna sell that to u mate because u are "underage" for heroin. pfft fuck off he would expect me to know about it and not another word would be said after the transaction.

Originally Posted by S7@1T3D Well I'm sorry but if you are alco, junkie, pothead or E head u should know Wat u getting ya self into and how it affects u. | I agree completely with this - and underage drinkers, more often than not, do not have a proper understanding of what they are getting themselves into and how it affects them. They might know about the immediate effects (ie. getting drunk), but they do not have an understanding of interactions between alcohol and the liver, or between alcohol and the brain, et cetera. Vendors won't do anything about it, because that would spoil their revenue, which is what matters to them. That is why we have legislation in place - whether that legislation is observed and obeyed or not is a different matter.
Before you make your next post, write it out, take some deep breaths, and then clean it up a bit (read: "u" isn't a word, et cetera). Show some respect for your own intelligence, ok?

Although i usauly drink with my freinds and thy like to drop shots man, i know what the risks are most kids do but they usaully choose to ignore them. But sometimes kids in my hood over do it and just get shitfaced and end up being the first ones to pass out at the party. In my opinion most highschool kidam are already fucke when it comes to getting good grades because of gangs financial problems an just being stupid.

Rep Power: 16 | | There is an argument to be made for drinking under parental supervision - at barbeques for example. This allows a teenager to experience the effects of alcohol with minimal risk.
I believe it is important for parents to teach their children responsibility in all things; eg. sex, drinking, driving (not at the same time!) I agree with Random re. unsupervised/unrestricted drinking. It's far too dangerous and damaging.
Supplying booze to an underage kid? Bad idea, unless you are their guardian and plan to supervise.

Rep Power: 0 | | Eh, that parental supervision is a good idea.
I should know, my three older sisters know exactly how to behave with it and I'll be the next one up to bat. My dad got hammered with his friends in his twenties on crappy beer and he's determined not to have that happen to me so I'll not try the risks...

Rep Power: 0 | | I will buy my kids alcohol when I have kids and here is why.
1. Look at all the countries with no drinking age or a low drinking age, in those countries drinking problems haven't escalated as they have in US, because when something is allowed you don't want it as much as if it was forbidden it's just human mentality.
2. I would much rather let my kids drink 10 years old rum or good wine than the shit you can buy at ABC.
3. They're going to drink no matter what so it's better if they drink under my supervision or at least I know when they are getting shit faced.

Rep Power: 0 | | But the thing with that is, if you let them get drunk with you there. They might think its fine for them to get drunk without you there and do it at a party and get alchohal[sp] poisioning cause they're daddy isnt there to tell them they've had enough.
But i should word that better. If you let them get drunk in your presents, they will probably think its fine for them to do it anywhere. When they do, they might not know they're limits cause you would probably limit they're drinks. They would get horribly drunk, do something they dont remember and is probably illigal[sp]

This way I won't loose control of them in college. So I stand by my decision, let kids drink, but teach them how to be cultured about it.

Rep Power: 0 | | Where I live you need to be 16 years old to buy beer, and 18 to buy the rest of it.
But some 12 year old suckers give adult homeless some money to let em buy beer or so for them.
So they can drink it by themselves.
And end up in the hospital in a coma.
(thats what they want, because they think it's "fun")
F*cking 12 year old boys...

Rep Power: 0 | | I think 13 year olds for example, are way too young to drink. But those who are 17 or older are old enough to drink in my opinion. I myself got drunk for the first time when i was 17. After that i drank alot, but nowadays i drink once or twice a year. And no more than six beers. I think most people, underage or not, find drinking enjoyable the first time and do it alot at first, but then calm down and dont drink as much.

Rep Power: 0 | | Doctors have come to the conclusion that anyone under 14 that drinks regularly, has an 80% chance of getting cancer in the liver. And besides that, 13 year olds can get into serious trouble if they drink. They have smaller bodies (mostly) than a 17 year old and can get alcohol poisoning easier.
