Default Homebrewing

With this thread, I wish to address matters dealing specifically with homebrewing (NOT distilling).

The most common beverages brewed at home are wine, beer and mead. I would like to see recipes.

I've been home brewing for a couple of years now. My only "recipes" are the brew kits I buy from the supermarket. Cheap way to meet my drinking needs.

Sadly, these are not widely available in my country.

I do cider and ginger beer. Nothing to boast about, but perfectly drinkable. As long as you clean and sterilise your containers properly you can't go far wrong.

Dude, that sucks. A ready-made brew kit makes things so much easier. You could look on the net for recipes of course, but getting the ingredients separately is more hassle. Try to find a brew shop in your area and talk to the guy behind the counter. They are usually brewers themselves, they can give you some pointers.

I've tried talking to some old dudes on the countryside - each rural family used to have their own recipe of beer or mead. However, they are mostly reluctant to explain the details - it is a family secret, after all.

My grandmother makes great fruit wine, but I messed up when I tried that recipe and overfermented it. Next year I will hopefully do better.

Try fermenting a freshly-squeezed apple juice with wild yeasts for around 2months, but do not forget to regularly remove the sludge that forms at the top (which I forgot to). This yields a sour taste, but you can add sugar for improved sweetness, only consider more sludge that will form.

Does anybody here know how to make beer or mead?

Thanks, but the brew-kits are easier. I'm not a brewing enthusiast, I just do it to save money.
