Default How To Filter Yeast Out of My Brew

Okay, so here's the rundown. About 8 weeks ago i started my own Apple Wine and I added 2 or 3 packets of yeast into a coffee filter and ziptied it so that it didnt fall out. i dropped this into about a half a gallon of apple juice and it worked perfectly. but now all the sugar and yeast that did escape has settled at the bottom of my concoction. I was thinking, to filter it, that i just pour it in a coffee filter that is attached to a water bottle so i can close the top and let it filter out overnight. this would work...i think. im trying to keep this underground since my mom works at home and i cant openly brew my own alcoholic beverages. any ideas for filtering the yeast and sugar out without suspicion on my parents part?

If there's still sugar, then it's not ready yet.
Can you tell me if the mix had bubbles coming from it.Also some apple juice has added chemicals to stop it from formenting, was it pure apple juice with no added e numbers etc.Did you use a one way valve,if not then you may have vinegar.
You can also decant the scrumpy and drink asis,a little yeast will not hurt you.

Firstly: you aren't supposed to contain the yeast. It has to spread through the brew in order to work. Yeast consumes sugar in order to multiply, producing co2 and alcohol as by-products. The co2 escapes through the air-lock that is supposed to be on top of the brewer.

When using a proper brewer the tap is a couple of inches above the bottom, so you don't get the yeast when you fill your bottles. It is advisable to have your brewer set on a bench so that you don't have to move it in order to fill your bottles, that way you don't disturb the settled yeast.
If you aren't using a proper brewer, or some other container with a tap, then you will have to pour the brew out the top. A fine filter is required, and will have to be changed or cleaned a couple of times as it clogs up with yeast.

BTW, john lee is correct. If there is still sugar in the brew then it isn't ready. The sugar should have been dissolved in the juice before adding the yeast in any case.

thank you. i read that you had to contain the yeast, but that wouldnt make sense. and as for the sugar, there is still some left. it used to bubble, but now it does not. it used to have froth like a beer does but now theres none. idk what the hecks wrong, but ill take you guys advice... so thanks. ill rip the coffee filter when i get a chance

Where did you read that you had to contain the yeast?

Best way to start brewing is with a home brew kit. It's usually a can of liquid hops/juice depending on what you are brewing, together with yeast and some simple instructions.

A brewer (the big tub thing with the airlock and tap,) is a wise investment if you plan on doing much home brewing. If you need a smaller version for concealability then there may be smaller models, or you could try making your own. Just make sure it seals properly. Having a tap to draw off the brew is much easier than pouring it out the top. Mom's going to be a bit suspicious if she sees you drenched in funny-smelling liquid.

i simply drilled a hole in the bottle cap of the bottle containing the mash, and ran some aquarium tubing from the bottle cap to a a glass of water. If it doesn't fit snugly then you can always use silicone glue or hot glue er what ever can create an airtight seal. If your parents are overbearing (like mine) Get creative

Be careful when fermenting fruits as the pectin it contains will be converted by the yeast into methanol. (when methanol is metabolized within the liver it is broken down into formaldehyde which is detrimental to nerves, specifically optic nerves.)
An easy solution to this is not to ferment fruit or to distill the shit out. Albeit a little methanol wont hurt but too little of a bad thing will never hurt.
What i do to determine the maximum amount of sugar i can use in my fermentation batch is i go to Home Distillation of Alcohol
go to preparing wash
there will be a drop down option to sugar based
move cursor over it, and click on max sugar concentration

Well, if you'd like to filter anything out of your wine/beer, have you considered using a wad of glass wool? Actually, a bottom layer in a large funnel with a wrapping around the walls would do nicely.

It also breaks the toughest emulsions in chemistry quite nicely as well...
