This thread is for posting guides on how to make various smoking contraptions. To make it easy to navigate, I ask that nobody posts unless it is a guide of some sort - preferably with pictures, although they are not necessary if you are clear enough.

If anyone has any questions about any of the guides, then PM the member who posted the guide and they can explain to you and possibly update the guide to be clearer.

*PART 1*

Alright kids, its arts and crafts time!

The anatomy of a conventional bong is *very* simple. It consists of a bowl (and screen), a stem (sometimes optional), a chamber, some liquid, and an opening for the mouth(s).



The picture above shows a generic bong, well, perhaps minus the chicken legs. Water fills the container and stem just up to the carb. The water level should really be at least an inch below the "rush hole" (also, "carb" "boost") so that when the bong is tilted the water won't leak. The job of the carb is to regulate where the air will be supplied from. If covered, the air (smoke) will come from the bowl; if uncovered, air will rush through the carb and force out the smoke remaining in the chamber.

The concept with which a bong works is very simple, and anyone who got at least mid way through high-school should have a basic knowledge of suction and what, theoretically, should make a good bong.

Why use a bong? Well, children - As the smoke comes through the water, it is filtered somewhat, thus giving you a cleaner smoke. The water is also known to cool the smoke, making it much smoother and allowing you to inhale a lot more smoke that is possible from a joint. Although many people prefer joints, some think that they are wasteful and prefer to use a bong. Its all personal preference in that department. A bong burns a smaller surface area of bud than a joint does. It's easy to notice that a joint lets loose a steady stream of smoke into the atmosphere when it's being passed around, while a bowl tends to smother the embers underneath ash and unburnt bud. Stoners may notice that a stalled bong will release a very thin stream of smoke compared to a burning joint. Moreover, bongs pull all the smoke into the chamber while joints still waste smoke even while being toked.

When making a bong, the main thing you must remember is that the key to a decent bong is airtightness. The better the seal, the better the suction - and the better the suction, the better the hit.

*PART 2*

How to make a basic bong.

You will need:

• A Plastic Coke Bottle
• A biro pen
• An Aluminium Can
• Scissors
• Some tape may be necesary for repairs

Step 1: Cut two small holes in the sides of the bottle around the half way up the side. Cut them on opposite sides, around the same diameter as the pen.

Step 2: Take the pen apart so that all you have left is a plastic tube. Place this through one of the holes at a similiar angle to the downpipe in the picture in post 1.

Step 3: Cut a square out of the side the aluminium can. The bigger you make it, the bigger your bowl will be.

Step 4: Roll the square into a cone shape and put the thinnest end into the end of your bong stem. This is your bowl - you can add a screen if you wish.

Step 5: Make sure the bong is airtight. Add tape if necesary to areas needing sealed.

There you have it. A basic bong for you and your friends to enjoy. You can substitute any of the main parts to upgrade this basic plan.

*PART 3*

The Gravity Bong AKA The Bucket



They are very easy to make, are hard to screw up, and give good hits. you can make one entirely out of a one-liter bottle, a two-liter plastic pop bottle, electrical tape, and some aluminum foil.

Step 1: Cut the top off the two-liter bottle. Make the bottle look like, essentially, a very tall cup.

Step 2: Cut the bottom off the one-liter bottle.

Step 3: Take a square of tin-foil and poke lots of small holes in the centre. This will eventually become your bowl.

Step 4: Cut a hole in the centre of the lid of the one-liter bottle. This should take up a large amount of the lid - depending on how big you want your bowl.

Step 5: Rest the tin-foil-bowl in the hole in the lid. Place it so that the tin-foil is shaped like a bowl, with a dimple sitting in the hole in the centre of the bottle. If you use a large piece of tin foil for your bowl then you can rest the excess over the edge of the lid and tape it down.

Step 6: Fill up the large bottle with water.

Step 7: Place the small bottle into the water-filled two-liter and screw on the bowl you made (filled with your preferred smoking substance). You may need to adjust the amount of water in the two-liter to compensate for the smaller bottle. NOTE: The water should come up to the shoulders of the smaller bottle - the shoulders and neck should be above the water.

Step 8: In one hand hold your lighter, and in the other hold the neck of the bottle - keeping it in the water. Light the bowl, and begin slowly pulling the bottle up and out of the water - keep the lighter to it and take it slow.

Step 9: When the bottle is getting near to coming out of the water completely, stop! If you take the bottom out of the water, you will let the smoke escape.

Step: 10: Finally, unscrew the bowl from the bottle, place your lips over the top of the bottle and dunk it back down into the water (all the way down) whilst inhaling. This forces all the smoke up into your lungs from the bottle.

There you have it - The Bucket. I will be, over time, making adjustments to this entry and improving various parts to make it easier to understand and make more sense, as right now it is a little hectic. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

[NOTE:]
If you have a set of sockets handy, you can skip cutting up the lid. Simply wrap tape around the socket until it fits snugly into the top of the bottle - and when I say snug, I mean a tight fit - and place in your tin foil. Much easier. You could also wrap tape around a bowl from a pipe and put that in.

*PART 4*

The Waterfall.



The waterfall is a personal favourite of mine - an unfiltered lungfull of thick creamy smoke. All you'll need is a bottle, some scissors and tin-foil.

Step 1: Make a small hole the diameter of a pen near the bottom of the bottle.

Step 2: Make a bowl like in part 3 of this thread, using tin-foil and the bottle-lid. Alternatively use a pipe-bowl or socket.

Step 3: Fill the bottle with water, keeping your finger over the hole so the water does not escape. After the bottle is full, screw your bowl (filled with desired smokables) onto the bottle - making sure to keep the water in the bottle.

Step 4: Hold a flame to your mix and let the water escape from the bottle. This will draw the smoke into the bottle.

Step 5: Once the bottle has filled with smoke, quickly unscrew the bowl from the bottle and take a nice deep breath.

*PART 5*

The Lung



Ok, the lung is another unfiltered lungfull. This is a good alternative to the waterfall, when water isn't an option. It does not provide as big a hit in my opinion, but it is still a handy contraption.

You will need: A bottle (any size you want), a plastic bag with no holes (important), some scissors, tape, a bowl.

Step 1: Cut the bottom off the bottle as if you were making a bucket.

Step 2: Put the plastic bag over the end that you cut, like in the above diagram. Tape it there making sure to keep it airtight.

Step 3: Make your bowl using any of the methods mentioned in this thread. Socket, foil - whatever.

Step 4: Push the bag inside the bottle and attach the bowl.

Step 5: This part can require some co-ordination. With the lighter held to your chosen herb (which should now be in the bowl, duh), slowly pull the plastic bag out from within the bottle. The suction from this should draw in smoke. Try and pull it out as far as possible and get the bottle nicely filled.

Step 6: Remove your bowl and take a deep breath. The bag will be sucked into the bottle and you will experience a nice lungful of thick smoke.

Make it out of tinfoil. Just squeeze it into a bowl shape, then poke some holes with a pin.

For the GBONG "g=gravity" for those who don't know

1. I was at my college in the science/egineering department and found a piece of glass that would work perfectly as a slide to a bong (including a cone bowl shape on top perfect for packing bud) I believe this was from a barrometric(sp) type instrument or something, it looked like a tall glass tube, with this slide resting in it (some oil liquid was inside).
2. Anyways, I took it but what made it really work was it had a glass on glass connection that stemmed under the bowl peice so it could fit perfect into 2l / vodka (other liquor drinks of your choice).
3. Cutting a hole in the bottom of the bottle you then would use it like an normal gb but the glass on glass made it taste so much better/cleaner.

I will try to draw up simple pics in paint and post them later (to explain the look of the side and how it slid into the bottle)...
because I left the gb top at a kid's house who I "parted" ways with . Good luck and be safe.

ps... the house the peice was left out was a party house and one of the kids was able to get a glass bottle "holed" out in the bottom so it was a glass on glass slide in a glass bottle in a glass bucket gb, very tasty and recommended.
pps... the kid that introduced me to the "party house" shortly attended college but dropped out and that was one reason we parted ways, but he had a friend who blows custom glass and made a copy of the slide I am talking about, so once I have some pictures up, although not to scale, they will have relations to bottles and what not, if you know anybody that can blow custom glass I suggest looking into the matter. It's a great time as most people will admit gbonging does get you pretty fucking high but the usual methods are dull/gross. Hope this has inspired some people to look for new methods of enhancing the high... and keeping it CLEAN!

I was "expanding" my thinking a little while ago and had an idea for people that can't come across a slide piece (engineering school or science stores maybe) like this or don't know anybody that can blow glass. Well basically find a rubber stopper or cork that fits the bottle you want to use well but can be removed without to much pull. Next get a regular glass slide from a headshop that they sell for bongs. Then all you need to do is match a drill bit up to the stem, use one that is slighter smaller than the stem, and drill a whole straight down through the rubber cork. Last thing is to slide the slide through drilled hole carefully, it will take some effort, and you have a similar basis except the stem skirt is rubber, but you still have a glass bowl to hit, and on a GBONG, which is priceless . I'll post a picture up later.

Make sure the plastic lid doesn't ignite and as it heats either take scisccors or a knife a puncture the very center (aproximately) of the cap. Work the puncture into an 1.5 diameter hole in the lid. Easy way is to get the blade up and get any of the plastic from the top cut out of the way and then just rotate the blade in the circle and it creates a nice circular hole with pretty smooth edges.
  *Since the hole is small in the cap this is why the "pencil sized" object was need for the bowl making. Make sure to use that when creating the depression and then add the pinholes in the same manner. Keep in mind the bowl does not have to be large as this is a gravity bong.* Now create the foil "bowl" in the same manner as before but make sure you have enough to get the foil back to the edges of the top so they can be securely scrunched underneated from the top to the bottom of the cap to keep the foil from moving.

2. The other way you could make this and keep the glass aspect is by simply going to a headshop and getting a cheap glass bowl&slide piece (both in one). Most they would cost you is 20 dollars (USD) but I'm sure you guys can find them for less than 15-10. Next thing is to get a rubber stop (as in a cork) that fits into the top of the bottle. When you find a cork that fits your bottle and slides in and out with a good hug and a good airtight aspect to it get a set of drill bits out and a drill. Start placing the tip of drillbits to the bottom of the slide shaft to see which bit looks as if it has the same cyclyndrical diameter. You want one SLIGHTLY (and JUST SLIGHTLY) smallar. Once you found the one drill striaght down through the center of the cork with the bit how ever you need to, be it using a clamp to hold it, measuring the cork to find the center, etc... Once you have the hole in the cork, carefully work the slide through it as it will be hard. This will give you a close imitation to the glass one I had. Enjoy.[/list:u:01281925dc]

*Aluminum foil is broken down after a while from the heat of the lighter. If it is used the sheets should be replaced so alluminium does not leach into the smoke. I believe it is linked to diseases such as Althemizeir's(spelling) but not 100% sure.

PS guys, after the GBONG glass bowl alternate i'll post a way to turn your ROOR into a hooka, I hate hookas but I have never got so high with this method off one pack (it will work with any bong probably)

Okay, so I got kinda bored at work the other day, and made this out of a 12 oz Dasani water bottle. The holes for the straws are perfectly fitting and it's like perfectly airtight. And the bowlpiece is a work of art I won't even get into. It seems to work fantastically, but I haven't had the chance to test it out yet. Here it is. What do y'all think?

Anyway, i made my own concept bong. Its one i can bring out in public too! I made it from an old cell phone:

material:
1)Motorola C333 (perfect phone for this. you can remove the entire phone from its casing without unscrewing anything. it all just pops out)
2)pen
3)scissors
4)glue or tape
5)aluminum foil
6)needle
7)weed
8)lighter

process:
1)open the phone and remove the casing

2)take the scissors and break the screen off the casing and remove it

3)take apart your pen to use the plastic tube (you can also just use a straw)

4)glue or take the keypad down so none of the smoke will escape through the keypad (let the glue dry if you used that and make sure its not sticking out. nobody wants to inhale glue fumes lol)

5)put everything back together (it will fit snugly back together)

6)you will notice a large part missing from the bottom. This is your carb. With it being large, you can cover it with your finger and uncover i when you want to use it. you can allow as little or as much oxygen as you want to go inside.

7)Place some aluminum foil over the screen

8)poke some holes in it with your needle (or use a toothpic or something of the sort to create small holes)

9)pul your pen in the slow the antenna was at (a pen is the PERFECT size for this. No need to siden the whole or anything. its a perfect fit!)

10)Place your weed on the foil

11)light and enjoy

it works pretty damn good. the sides are covered, the antenna hole is the perfect size for a pen, customizable carb, and extremely cheap. This will only cost about $20 max. You can get the phone for about $10 on ebay. and the rest of the stuff is cheap (provided you already have the weed)

the only reason it works in public is because it looks like any old phone. just use your mouth to cover the straw/pen and nobody will notice lol.
well they will.....if they see you lighting your screen and breathing out smoke. i smoke out of this at parks. and its super light weight and portable.

oh yeah and if you dont have any tape or glue to keep the keypad down, you can push it through the holes. this will keep it in place.

another bonus, depending on the size of the pen/straw, you can completely push it in if anybody comes over to you. then you can just cover the screen and be all "yeah this is just my phone" lol. then push it back up through the carb and continue smoking.

ok, well, i made a bong out of some simple but very effective tools. first, i took a trumpet mute out of metal, and drilled a hole into it. with some heat resistant glue i stuck a tube out of metal in it, but i have a problem with attaching a holding device for the weed! have any advice? thanks!

oh, by the way, its all out of metal, so its all clean. its very thin though, so its easy to drill through. if needed ill post some pics.

Yeah sorry moderator guy if this infracts your rules but i was with my second cousin and he showed me this site called smokinginstyle.com or smokeinstyle.com or something like that and it showed how to make a bong out of an apple. which is pretty tight. stew said it supposedly made the smoke taste better...? check it out

i dunno if that's true never heard it before, but i know that the heat of the tin foil can scar your throat/mouth if it gets too hot

If you really want to you could get artsy and take some potters clay/Model clay, whatever you call it, and form it into your desired shape free hand or form the clay around a smooth object to create the peices. E.g. you could take the clay and form it around a smooth pipe or can for the neck. Don't be an idiot and forget to take the object out though. Find a smooth ball (or whatever you want) that is wider then the diameter of the pipe and form clay around that, cut off what clay you need to get the ball out and flatten the bottom. Now hopefully you've done this fast enough so the neck and bowl are still malleable and can pinch the two peices together and insert you stem into the bowl (get creative for the stem). Now that the basic forming is over, you can add with the still malleable clay any designs, embossing, or whatever you want, at this point I added my choke hole by carefully poking through by twisting a small screwdriver. Once your done, heat the clay. Now I realize that most of us don't have a kiln, so I've used my dad's Oxy-Acetelene torch (sorry for spelling errors) and put a cooler flame on it and gently heated and cured the clay. it can take a LONG time, so depending on how patient your are is how long you will want to cure the clay and how well it turns out. I spent about 3 hours on it. After all that is done, you have your custom puffer! Paint it, do whatever with it, it'll be fragile, so be nice to it. HAPPY PUFFIN'!

good idea..the thing i hate about most homemade bongs is that they are rarely airtight and they have an odd "taste" if you know what i mean (especially the ones with tinfoil for a screen and everything else plastic) ive tried a couple hits out of a pottery bong and they seem to be cleaner hits

Self drying clay is usually not waterproof, even if you paint it. And unfortunatly no, an oven even on broil (550F about depending on the model) can't get hot enough. What you really want is around 2000F, that would be preferred.

A lung bong can also be made by using a Camelbak resevoir, or an empty bag of wine.
For the Wine Bag, you'll have to remove the rubber valve at the spout, but otherwise it's perfect for the job.
The Camelbak has to be cleaned regularly or it will get moldy for some reason.

you're not heating the glass uniformly and/or your torch isn't hot enough and the reason its shattering is its cooling down too quickly.
My suggestion: go to your local hardware store and pick up some diamond tipped cutting bits, and just drill a hole or two or three. also while you're there pick up a circular file. slow and steady is the method here don't be to hasty. yes, ive done this before and it works well, kind of takes some time but works.


and for all others, STOP using Coke/Pepsi brand bottles the best bottle to use for your cheap bongs are Gatorade or Powerade bottles they are stronger and wont collapse under pressure. plus you can find these things in all sizes from 8 oz to 128 oz.
hookah style bong: drill your hole through the cap, i use a slider glass stem and glass bowl, drill a small hole in the side of the bottle smaller than your hose and apply pressure to get your hose in the hole. quick, easy, efficient. you could substitute the glass stem for something fixed and just twist the lid slightly off as a carb.

for stems go to your local hardware store in the lighting section they sell these threaded rods in all kinds of lengths, they're actually the same size as those old school metal pipes so if you have one of those pipes pick up a coupling and your set to go. also when i used to work at fil'a'chick their coffee maker has that glass tube to let you know how much coffee is in the machine they kept a couple of extras on hand, yet another great stem idea, or go to your local head shop and pick one up they're 5 or 10 bucks depending on the length you get.
if you cant get your hands on surgical tubing, electrical tape works well as a grommet to seal your stem to its hole.
no super glue or caulking or putty required.

and lastly for hose if you're going for that cheap made hookah and you cant find surgical tube, then use resistant bands from fitness equipment i found one of these things at a goodwill (free) and it gave me 2 sections of 3' tube.

hello all! bare with me, as i try a new idea for a bong.
i thought after watching lots of startrek when being baked: what would an alien bong look like?? and it comes to mind of a hi tech, super stylish, allrounder bong. now, im ok with some things, such as wiring, and shit, and i thought of this cyber bong. it wont have standard setup, so no long tube, but chamber thing, with the first chamber sucking in smoke via a fan, which sucks it straight into the next chamber. here, some LEDs, (preferrably with changing colours) light up the smoke ( as this would add a cool effect), with digital temperature measurement gauge at the top. inside the third chamber, we have liquid cooling, with frozen CO2 passing through tube stuctures where the smoke is monitored. when it is ready (ie temp., density of smoke), the LED behind the smoke turns green. now, the valve comes into action, so you suck it, but as soon as you stop sucking, it closes again. as this wouldnt work for transport, but this would be an awsome thing to have in the car, with maybe the grill cooling it down extra xDDD

this is never goping to happen, but we can all learn from some infos here. i like the idea of the LED behind the smoke, plus the fan, and even the liquid cooling, because due to it, you dont lose any THC to the bong water.
