The FDA is about to take the reins in the tobacco industry. Under H.RES.532 and H.R. 1256 (The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act), flavored cigarettes and low-tar cigarettes are banned. It gives the FDA the capabilities to shut down the flavored tobacco industry as a whole and allows them to regulated a multitude of other factors in the tobacco industry. All in the name of protecting the family. I'm sure glad in the future my child will not smoke because low-tar cigarettes are outlawed. A brighter tomorrow.

We all love some sarcasm in the morning. A good decision by the U.S government(first in a while).

Default regulating us

I am not in any way advocating for children using tobacco, I'm saying I doubt this will, in any way, curb minors using it. With these new bills, the adult smokers take the hit (pun intended.) The American government has, in my opinion, begun taking as much power away from the people and into its own hands as it can get away with. An adult should be able to make his own decision about whether or not to use tobacco. No one in this country is uninformed about the risks of tobacco, (Mr. Surgeon General has seen to that) and it should be a citizen's own prerogative to choose, NOT our government.

No kidding. It is pretty ridiculous. If someone wants to smoke himself/herself to death let 'em. It would probably do the world some good!

While the FDA is set up to regulate food and drug standards (which tobacco falls under), it should in no way have the power to ban or completely make illegal an entire facet of an industry without any form of medical justification. What we have here is social engineering.

The argument is that flavored tobacco appeals to youths. This is not true in many cases. What appeals to youths is the nicotine buzz. They'll take what they can get. Trust me, I was one of those youths. To use the FDA, an organization set up to regulate standards in consumables, as a tool to push an anti-tobacco agenda is wrong and not what I care to see in American law.

I'm pretty shocked by this. Shocked.... Bombshocked.... hmm. Anyway. The banning of favoured fags will never stop kids smoking. I started smkoing at the age of 10 (i know pretty fucking awful but anyway) i wasn't smoking bloody flavoured cigs, you take whatever you can get a hold of. And what's worse about this stupid ban is the fact it gives proper adults less choice to enjoy tobacco. I know majority of people will smoke regular fags, or rolling tobacco, but some people may really enjoy flavoured and low-tar cigs, and your taking there right to enjoy them away basically.

Surely however this will cost alot of people jobs? i mean if flavoured cigs and low-tar cigs are made on a different line, surely it won't be needed anymore? So these men/women would just be layed off?

I'm shocked the FDA has the power to close down a relitively large part of the tabacco industry. I'm more appauled there being used as a tool against smoking.

Not happy with the world today now

Well, the legislation has come upon us, and is law. No more flavored cigarettes legal for purchase in the US. Some brands are getting around the bill by saying their products are cigarillos or mini cigars. But, as a whole, the smoking community has done nothing but grin and bear it.

It is sad such a large demographic of Americans must always be subject to such rights infringement. In addition to this, an example of unfair taxation at it's finest, a several hundred percent increase on tobacco tax has been implemented as well.
