Pre-built computers I see are much less the way you want it. The reason it's cheaper is because it comes with parts that the company bought from other companies and you may not want that version, therefore you have to upgrade. Such as a Raedon Hyper Memory Video card, if you are a high PC gamer you might want a better version, or a whole new video card. Yet these companies such as Dell, HP, and Alienware are offering more and more combinations of parts. Building your own PC for personal stuff that you enjoy used to be the best, but now that other people are offering more and more different products, getting a pre-built one may be better. But also you can build one for cheaper using recycled parts

Cost is one of the main factors, however some people do it for pure enjoyment or a sense of accomplishment.
