Not quite. "Flashbangs" (aka M84 Stun Grenades) use a combination of magnesium and ammonium perchlorate. This filler is packed into a specially designed casing to allow the filler to go off, producing the light and sound, but without launching shrapnel everywhere.

I'm pretty sure that ammonium perchlorate isn't a common material involved with homemade flash powder.

Hmm, I've allready got a few ideas brewing about how you could do this....I can immagine you could easily make a casing were the explosion would go out one spot. But that could be tricky, Id say use a cardboard casing thats thin, and a HE so you dont need much containment. And produces alot of light.

wut if you got a pipe and drilled holes into it.. then put flash powder in and tape all the holes up. so when you light it it bangs(from the confinment) and shoots flame out the side. if you had a fine enough mixture it might work right?

military flashbangs are a blasting cap with a magnesium main charge

you probably won't be able to make a flashbang at home, successfully, without half decent equipment and materials. If you do, it'd be a very crude(shit) one at that.

I wouldn't be surprised if police and military have the same suppliers.

well, i think that if you want a flashbang, you shouldnt focus on the bang, but the effects the bang has on the body.
criteria are:
has to be non lethal
has to deafen
has to blind
has to be fast acting.

i think for the second, one should use a notsofine powder of magnesium and an oxidizer, so it deflagrates. this would mean longer bright magnesium light, which we know is bright, making it burn longer, (due to larger partices) producing more light).
for the noise, i would build in a metal whisle, so that the expanding gasses can escape through them, producing extremely loud noise. these whisles are not the normal ones, but the ones that actually cause a tinitus. it has to be exactly the right note for that. fast acting is it anyways, as its an explosive xD
and as said above, against making it lethal, the use of fast burning compounds is better than explosive compounds, and a hardened steel casing should do the job, and the gasses have an outlet, namingly the whisle xD

Aren't they basically big m-80's with pull fuzes in perforated metal cannister so they can be thrown through windows and such? I thought I read somewhere that they only have like 5.5 grams of powder in there, its like military MAG-33 formula or something, not quite sure on the number.

I build the "fun-pops" detailed in the manufacturing grenades thread to assuage my pull-pin desires.. they are basically a flash bang device in principal and operation, just broken down into simple components and improvised. Whoooo! They're great too, i feel safe playing with them due to their open construction and visual confirmation of fuse burn rate. It takes some balls to rig a fuse lighter on a cap and fuse all taped to a fair wad of HE, stuff the whole works into a can, and pull the sucker knowin full well the thing would just about blow you in half if the fuse jumped... Crazy means playin odds you have calculated and feel safe with, but thats just damn near stupid. The awesome payoff of having tossable craters... versus dying so fast you don't hear or feel it...shit man ya know?
