I think your theory is incorrect from the very start.
First, you are thinking of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), not nitrous oxide (N2O).
N2O is commonly known as laughing gas, is colourless, and can be pretty fun.
NO2 is a heavy brown gas, and would cause you some very painful problems if you huffed a balloon full of that.
I'm not even sure if these are by-products of modern fuels.
Second, Acid rain is more attributed due to the creation of sulphuric acid (H2SO4) from heavy concentrations of sulpherous gases ( just checked wiki. Sulphur dioxide. Gives a must less bumbly account of it all).
Also, modern engines and fuels burn cleaner, so the likelihood of these gases in abundance is reduced.
