Sulfur Chloride

Heya guys, I've been searching my ass off for a reasonable sulfur chloride (S2Cl2) synth.. Till now all I've read about is passing chloride gass through sulfur. If someone would be able to pass me a good synthesis I'd be incredibly happy! thanks!

whats sulfur chloride used for? Obtaining sulfur nitrides ? which are explosive.

Well, sulfur chloride can be used in preparing acetic anhydride. Acetic anhydride is in it's turn used for the synthesis of HMX. Acetic anhydride is a BITCH to get your hands on.


Assuming that misa, it means that I'd have to heat the sulfur up to 115-120 degrees celsius. Should I use a vacuum on top of the reflux condensor to make sure I get a steady gas flow through the sulfur and keep the setup water free? Got an idea for a good chlorine gas generator also?? I've got hydrochloric acid 30% and sodiumhypochlorite (or I can look for other stuff if needed).. Also thinking about using a sulfuric acid washbottle to get the chlorine acid dry.. will that work or does sulfuric reacts with chlorine gas? And how do I prevent sulfur dichloride from forming??

X-ray Cat: Honestly, I've never even looked into making this compound as I've never carried an interest in it. That's why I provided the scimad link. They know more about it than I ever will & they've already covered the bases as it seems.

If you're serious about it, I'd consider registering an account & engaging the most appropriate thread.

I'm sorry, but this is a compound I don't know any more about at this time. Wish I could be of more help.

Well, I'm not looking for scientiffic approaches to the task. All I'm looking for is a synth written out. Anyone could have or find that. Plus I thought I should give you guys a shot first :

My initial idea for making S2Cl2 also came from sciencemadness btw misa . However, a couple of minutes ago I re-searched for a disulfur dichloride and I found another link for sci-mad:

Including other pathways including bromine..

everything seems do-able (with considerable risk in using crappy halogens, bah, hate toxic crap) xept getting anhydrous sodium acetate maybe a bit of a problem. Anyone an idea?
