The basic debate is how effectively will humanity be able to return to the high level of technology after some sort of global cataclysm.

To take away as many variables as possible, I will outline the basic scenario that fits best with the debate.

Scenario:

A group of 50 people survive a nuclear holocaust by suspending themselves in time for 500 years. As far as they know, they are the only people on earth. After the bombs drop, and nuclear fallout and dust particles in the atmosphere kills all but a small fraction of plant life (evenly distributed around the planet) the process of the earth healing itself begins. By the time the group are unfrozen, the world is exactly as it had been if humans had never touched it.

The Group:

They are evenly distributed over all of the trades and sciences, an equal number of men and women and they are all able bodied. Each has a minimum of 5 years experience in their field, most have upwards of 10. You can assume there's someone who knows their shit when it comes to anything your trying to debate, but they are trained in aspect of their feild that deal with using modern tools and methods to accomplish their goals, not making a radio out of coconut shells Eg, if you say "they can produce penicillin by culturing it from bread" there would be a microbiologist and a baker to collaborate on that project.

The question(s):

How would they go about recreating the level of technology that we enjoy today, and how long would that take?

The area and resources available:

Lets say they are in western Canada. The summers are 25C and the winters don't reach below -10C other than in very rare circumstances. They direct environment is a forest somewhere in the rocky mountains, the trees are 200-400 years old, there are glacial rivers running nearby and valleys with nutrient rich soil. There are iron reserves in various forms scattered about the area. Copper and other metals such as gold can be found through sifting through river beds and combing through pebbles.

You would probably wonder if the preservation chambers can be used in the building of technology.Yes, they are part of the argument. You can assume that when the people left their time, they took with them small trinkets of their past, but nothing substantial like tools or weapons. Only things you would never think to bring like platinum and gold jewelery, eye glasses, time pieces, books of matches ect. Another thing you can assume is that the pods or chambers can be used for raw materials. To simplify, The rules are that you cant reverse engineer them or anything like that. They can be used as a source of hardened steel, and some basic things like cloth and aluminum but only a small amount of each.

So far I would think that right away they would use the steel from the pods as knives and axes to carve a turbine for electricity that is turned by the rivers or the wind running through the valleys. Copper can be found quite easily in the area, that could be used to conduct the electricity to the village and the electricity can then be used for sparking fires and it turning primitive electric motors.
