Judges and Kings Alexander Tytler said,
“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.
Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage."
This critique of Democracy, as the reader should note, does not stand alone in defiance of one form of government. The discussion here is to share opinions on what one thinks is the ideal social order or government for a specific culture (you should probably use the culture with which you are most familiar, for example; don't claim communism is a farce from the perspective of a USA ideology. Chinese society identifies itself as collectivist; USA is clearly an individualist society. The same kind of government may not work for both cultures). Or feel welcome to share your thoughts on any government or society you've encountered. That said, for the sake of healthy discourse I'd like to see some debates and critiques of one another's opinions. I think mature people show themselves in their temperament.
I personally am not a nationalist. I think that humans are better provided for mentally and physically in a fully sustainable tribal subsistence. The only other animal identified by groups the size of nations are insects. Clans and tribes have worked since our species emerged; modern industrialized society is a blimp on the radar by comparison. I maintain that the extension of individual lifetime is a poor judge of what indicates affluence. I don't have to mention the effect on the ecology modern industrialization has wrought either. And this is a source of political detachment for me, I am a civil disobedient and hope to achieve an alternative subsistence outside the jurisdiction of my home government one day.
