You don't get it cut as this is inherently suspicious. He would have to transfer the impression to a piece of metal, preferably stainless or chrome-alloy steel, then shape the new key using a small hobby file. Provided the impression is good and the filing has been done carefully it should work. The smaller the key the more difficult it would be.
I would recommend using the plasticine impression as a stamp by applying ink to the raised surfaces. Once he has an inked outline on paper he can scan/photocopy it as many times as he likes. Glue the silhouette to a piece of steel and file accordingly.
Obviously this takes time but once done he could open the safe easily and quickly, whereas picking the lock would take a few minutes each time, even if he was profficient.
AND USE GOOD QUALITY STEEL! If a piece of crappy mild steel or brass breaks off in the lock it wil be obvious that someone has tried to get in and the list of suspects will be extremely short. It may be possible to get a "blank" key of the right type from a locksmith but he will likely be suspicious. And for goodness sake don't show him the impression.
