Rep Power: 0 | | laminators Ive read the Ultimate Guides and much of this thread, and a few other places, however I found nothing on what specific laminator to use for teslin novelty ids. I have spent the past several days searching for laminators and realize there are hundreds to choose from. Obviously I want a legit looking lamination, as its said that the lamination can make or break an id, but I don't want to pay $300.
My questions are:
Do i need a laminator with 4 rollers for a good lamination, or will 2 rollers have just the same effect?
I've read to use 10mil think laminate (im making CA novelties w/10mil teslin) but alot of laminators don't laminate 10mil....can I get by if I laminate twice with 5 mil? And if I ran 10mil thick through a laminator designed for 5 mil what would be the consequences, would I simply have to run it through again to complete the lamination?
What's the cheapest laminator I could get away with using?
Also,
What model laminator do you use? and How much did you pay for it?
and is their another, EFFECTIVE, way to laminate without purchasing a laminator? i.e. did you have one accessible at university, was their a laminator you could personally operate at a store near you???

Rep Power: 0 | | tree bread, scroll to the end, I'm ranting here on top ...
Nobody seems to be answering these posts anymore. I created two new threads, and got nothing either. It seems nobody here really knows anything of value, save for a few people. Those people don't seem to be answering any questions. I contacted one of them via private message, and got nothing back. I saw him online on the forum, and he was reading MY post, but never responded. I ended up paying someone around $850 for some rubber stamps + a few good templates for my thermal PVC printer along with a microprint technique that worked using only $400 in used equipment that can be had on eBay! This guy came from another forum, and his stuff is top notch. The money is here people. Just start answering fucking questions. You'd think with all the info shared here in the past someone would be sharing new information instead of just coming up with random bullshit. There are people looking for answers here. I had to pay for mine and did happily, because the ROI is tremendous.
I have a very valuable service to offer, something everyone here looks for and considers difficult to obtain, that I have by the metric fuck ton. But apparently nobody here is into paying more than 100 pounds of virtual gold in a damn WoW game and some iTunes gift credits they got from their grand mother for anything.
If you're serious, you up the cash. It's not hard to pull in several thousand dollars a week doing a few things vaguely mentioned in these forums. But the information doesn't come free. I charge for virtually everything. But when I'm asking for information about an age old Alps hologram method or about where to find new MA and such ID templates, when they are available, and the guys that know it are seen actively reading my PMs and the forum post I made, you'd think they'd be kind enough to answer. Oh well. I'll be kind enough to start answering some peoples questions here as long as it's nothing that's worth more than $500. Sorry.
As for you tree bread, when I was doing the Teslin method (which I consider inferior to getting a top notch PVC printer; there are companies that make the ones the DMVs use and sell them [without the good holographic & OVD overlaminate, of course] for around $6,000 but you can buy low volume small portable ones for approx $2,000 to $3,000], so use Teslin and make some money *cough* alternatively *cough* with them and buy the others .. Teslin feels like shit when someone that is familiar with a PVC ID handles it) I would use the magnetic strip Teslins, otherwise if there was no mag stripe on the back I'd use a regular laminate. I'd pass it through a $50 laminator I bought at an office store, over sized. Then I'd take a die cutter and cut it out to size. If you don't want to invest $300 in a die cutter just yet, then you can use some of those rounded scrap booking scissors that make squiggly lines and just use one of the portions of the edge to make a rounded edge. Then sand down. I don't know how many rollers it had, I think just 2. Sometimes it fucked it up though.
I also used 10mil on most. Anything less is flimsy and feels like shit.
Make sure to rough up your IDs to age them, plus you've then got an excuse if anyone is suspecting your ID as fake as to why it looks and feels like crap, instead of telling them 'I printed it on Teslin!'.
Use a laminator you bought. The cheapest one I think that's worth using is approx $50. I don't know the model.
I do have a laminator I never used sitting here. It's the perfect size for DL/CC sized laminate. It's still in the plastic packaging, never opened. It cost $75. I threw $5k on a used PVC printer around the same time I bought it, and never got around to using it. I use 1mil overlaminates with the PVC or the built in laminator. If you have something worth while to trade for it I'd be willing to send it to you if youre in the US or Canada. I'd be willing to trade for decent ID templates, better info on hologram generation methods for each state as well as Pearl-ex mixes, rubber stamps for a few states, whatever. I also have a MSR card reader (not writer, that's mine! ;-]) for sale. But keep in mind you can steal these easily from most health clubs, they often keep them at personal trainers computers and at the front desk and stuff to scan CCs and maybe membership cards. If you have something really good to trade I'll send you both the card reader AND the laminator. Plus I have some DL/CC sized laminates with magstripe and also w/ no magstrip on the back left over from the old days.
I'm in Chicago so shipping is easy and quick to wherever.
Thanks

Rep Power: 0 | | Thanks for the response. no i don't have anything of value that you probably don't have, and everything I have i just got from intensive internet surfing. Like all my template are from the Ultimate guides and such.
Also, is there any point in having a magestripe reader, if you already have a magestirpe reader/writer???
And I think the problem of activity can be attributed to the fact that there is small populous of people knowledgeable on the novelty id process. And of that small process even fewer are on these boards. The same goes with those trying to create novelty ids. Although everyone may want a novelty, not many want to make them.
And forums, of any sort, thrive on new and engaging topics presented by the large member base. And because of the huge member base, many members are online at any given time, allowing topics to be developed quickly.
So I believe that the reason these boards are slow is because there just isn't enough people around who know/want to know about this topic, and because of this there is a less than optimal member base, and thus few people on at any given time.
None the less however, their is definitely enough information for a rook like myself to begin crafting novelty ids without any prior knowledge. It is when specific or advanced techniques, that someone already proficient at id making needs, that these boards may become of little use.....but I hesitate to say useless. Because a criminal always returns to the scene of the crime, its just a matter of when.... Quote:

i think u can buy magnetic tape, and put it on teslin before you laminate it
try takin a vhs tape apart, cut film the length and width of mag-stripe on back of card your duplicating, then 3m it to back of card, then laminate it at a low heat level

Rep Power: 1 | | Tree-Bread - To answer your questions about lamination, and the thickness of a Cali ID...First, a REAL Cali ID/DL is approx. 26 - 28 mils thick when it's brand new. I say "approx." because they recently made changes to their laminates in 2009. They switched to a completely glossy laminate that seems to be a few mils thicker than the 2007 one I have. The 2007 ID's also used a matte/soft crystal lamination. Yes, teslin does bond with lamination better than ANYTHING else, that is what Cali DMV uses. The problem is getting something that will print good on teslin. The ink jet teslin is garbage, no matter how much you adjust the color/saturation/hue in photoshop, it still always looks faded and washed out. The laser teslin works great if you have access to a GOOD color laser printer. You should always use a laminator if possible, an iron (set to medium heat) will work if you have nothing else, but you may run into problems with air bubbles. A good laminator eliminates this because it uses pressure, heat, and rollers to "squish" out all the air bubbles. Someone else asked about the "alps" method for doing holos...it still works, I printed some a few weeks ago, and they came out perfect. If you search for a post I wrote called "Printing Holos with a Dye-Sub" you can read how it's done...

Rep Power: 0 | | I have just started creating IDs on the side just more of a hobby than anything. I have done my research and am starting to buy supplies/equipment, but still a little unsure what to get. So far I have my die cutter, printer, and stamp set. Now I need a laminator and from what I have read the key aspects are heat control and make sure its oversized.
Would this laminator be work investing in? Despite its heavy metal rustic look it sees to be a pretty good laminator for a decent price. New Hot Wide Roll 13 Inch Laminator Model AL13P - eBay (item 170395139487 end time Nov-14-09 16:52:06 PST) | | Laminator

New Hot Wide Roll 13 Inch Laminator Model AL13P - eBay (item 170395139487 end time Nov-14-09 16:52:06 PST) | That laminator will do absolutely fine. Personally, I use a little tiny one I got for like 30 bucks. You will definitely be happy with that one, especially with the heat control. That may be something you could get away without, but that feature allows you to experiment and find better settings.
You mentioned you have stamps, where did you order from? I am looking into gettting some but am affraid to send some company the hologram artwork. Did you do it online? Did you make it yourself? Do you find a local shop? I'd like to know what worked for you, thanks.

It was a MAJOR nightmare, I want to avoid personal details because I have been told this forum is closely monitored, but it was certainly a fucken legal mess.

Rep Power: 0 | | In the guide is talks about how it's best to get a CR79 die cutter for the PVC card method to cut the overlam at this slightly smaller size because this is what is done on real licenses.
I've searched all over the net and have yet to find a single place selling CR79 die cutters. I've found the more standard CR80 die cutters of course, but not the one called for. Does anyone know where the hell to get a CR79 die cutter?
Furthermore the guide talks about how "many" id supply sites carry overlams already cut to the size of pvc cards. I haven't found these either. Where can you buy overlams already cut to size?
