If you're being mugged, they will threaten you with either size and numbers (one big guy or multiple guys), knives or guns. If it's one unarmed guy, most likely he's pretty beefy. You're going to want a weapon. Back away and pull it behind your back. Lots of people will flee at the sight of a knife. If he doesn't, scream like crazy. People will shout 'Help!' but personally I prefer 'Fire!' Why? Because people are more interested in seeing a fire than helping someone. If there's anybody around it's more likely they'll show up, or look out their window at you or so on. Muggers hate that. If this fails, do what you can to hurt them. Use everything I've already told you.
If there are multiple or armed assailants, the best idea is to have a FAKE WALLET. This is a wallet with 20 bucks in it, made out of cheap fake leather and has a few fake or expired cards in it. Stuff you don't mind losing. Chuck it at them and say "Here, take it, that's all I got." Try not to wear and carry lots of expensive stuff when in dodgy areas. It's just common sense. For me to teach you how to fight multiple or armed opponents in text only is stupid.
While we're on this track, let's talk self defense. I know a lot of girls that keep a little can of 'mace' in their handbag. If someone's going for you, how much time have you got to rummage around in there, open up the cap and get it in their eyes? Not enough. It's probably not even real mace - real mace is quite expensive and is mostly used by police. The terms 'mace' and 'pepper spray' are used interchangeably. But I digress. You NEED to have it readily available and it has to be deployable in one second tops, otherwise it's pretty much useless. It's not too bad to have it clipped to the inside of a pocket or belt. And make sure you weren't ripped off by whoever sold you this can of spray. If it was really just water, how would you know? Most people don't even test. If you have a taser, make sure it's not a scam one that hurts as much as one of those shocking joy buzzers. Problem is, who are you going to test it on? Yourself? A friend? I don't think so. The solution is to not to cheap out and to buy from a reputable company or dealer. And make sure the batteries are fresh!
As far as self defense weapons go, flashlights are a good pick. They're very legal, disorienting to dark-adapted eyes, and not a bad strike weapon when nothing else is available. SureFire.com has some stories on self-defense torches saving people's lives etc. Some of them might be a little exaggerated but the point is there. This is probably the part I am most knowledgeable in, trust me on this, if nothing else. Get an LED flashlight. You'd be surprised how much a 3 watt luxeon or CREE LED can do. Forget your krypton / xenon bulb torches, your MagLites etc. LED is where it's at. More efficient on batteries and a much whiter beam. You're looking for a lot of light and possibly a crenellated bezel. I have this combination:
This torch
These batteries
This charger
It works great. The torch has a tight hotspot, puts out more light than a MagLite 6D and the stainless steel edge is sharp and painful. If you don't want to mess with specialized lithiums try this one, or this if you're looking to spend a little more coin. All three of these torches I've linked to here will put out a good 200 lumens of light and are big enough to hold with your hand and strike with the head with good grip. Shameless plug: DealExtreme has some great stuff and all the stuff is free shipping worldwide. You should check out some of their other stuff, lasers, lighters, etc.
To be able to defend yourself in most situations, you need to think and act smart, be prepared, and ultimately ready for what life can throw at you. That's all I got to say for now. I'm sick of typing. Will add to this later.
I'm completely open to criticism, if you find something to disagree with by all means say so.

There is one thing I disagree with and thats aiming for the heart, guts and eyes. Unless they have a weapon aswell, your just asking for jailtime.
On an unrelated note, do you learn knife fighting at your TKD class or is it just a hobby?

I actually agree with VillageIdiot, if your life is on the line aim to kill the SOB. Better to be jidged by twelve then carried by six as the saying goes.

I know the answer to this riddle.... YOUR CAT.
Only joking, it just reminded me of a rumour in high school that a girls father bought her a stun gun for protection, and she wanted to test it, so she used it on her cat.

If he doesn't have a weapon, and you do, I dont think your in that much danger. Pulling a knife on someone is ussualy more than enough to make them back away. If they don't, slash their arm or something. They will realise your serious and back off.

If you don't see a weapon it doesn't mean there isn't one. Usually if a person is attacking you, its their choice so whatever you do to defend yourself is fine IMHO. Now thats a little different then what the laws says.
Here is the thing, there are four reactions to conflict; Posturing, Submission, Retreat & Fighting.
Posturing: Is where two people try to pump themselves up by appearing more threatening then they are and causing the other to submit.
Submission: Is where the losing party of the posturing match backs down. And yes, this could/might happen if one party brandishes a weapon.
Retreat; is where one party flees rather then submits. This is not a submission but a regrouping of oneself to be better prepared (i.e. get a gun for guy who pulls a knife).
Fighting: This pretty cut and dry...
What I'm saying boils down to this, if you are going to draw a weapon you had better draw it with the intention of using it. Not using a weapon is pointless, its called escelation of violence if you use a weapon for posturing to deter one voilent attempt, the attacker will in turn get a weapon to posture that you do not have an advantage, and so on and so on. Eventually, someone will fire the first shot and tactically its best to be the one to do that. Its not popular with the law-makers or people opposed to violence but its a reality that had to be addressed.

Same thing as with a bank robbery or something. Don't point the gun at someone unless you are willing to pull the trigger, because if someone calls your bluff, you are fucked.

I have been mugged.
The next time the person tried to mug me I pulled a knife an managed to somehow get the knife in his arm, right through the bicep.
I then ripped the knife out tearing the mussel and ending the fight.
Often wounding is all you need, never try and kill because you will be killed by his mates for utu.

And what stops him from killing you for wounding him later? Dumb luck... End it quick and quietly no one has to know who you are. If he has a buddy with him and they still want to fight kill them to but if they run away they will be labled pussies by their friends. Screw it, most guys on the street don't have balls to kill anyone and when they are confronted by the people who will back off quick. If your actions but you in danger you dumb ass got what you deserved...

hmmm... brass knuckles good times... you better know how to use em' don't bitch if you break some bones.
ok. you can either go to another state get a contact over there or find a mailbox buy some online(20 bucks) mail them to the mailbox collect and go home. or if you're looking to make some Wear two gloves on the same hand, and place a piece of sheet metal between the two. The piece of metal should be cropped to go over your knuckles, the outer glove stops the metal from falling out, the inner one protects your hand from abrasions or wear rings. not illigal and hurts like a bitch to get hit with. also people cant call you a "punk, pussy, bitch" for wearing em

He had no reason to get utu.
I won and he thought that attacking me would result in more of the same.
If I had killed him then his mates would have to get utu, they would have no choice.

Inducing a mild heart attack.

Sorry for going back in this thread but i was shocked by the statements in this post, lol...
I was reading through this thread and read this post. Now im in my first year of medschool and studied biomedical sciences before and this is NOT how a heart atack works. If you'd hit the neck you indd might induce tissue swelling. However, because the carotid artery runs on both sides plus tissue swelling is incredibly inferior to the force put out by the artery to keep it flowing you will NOT stop blood flow by this act. You might even increase it, lol. However, your bloodpresure is indd measured by your body in the carotid artery in the neck. Therefor putting presure on this neuroreceptor makes the presure on this location rise. Your bodies response will be the downregulation of bloodpresure, causing your systemic pressure to drop quickly. Due to this you might faint. However, your victims bloodpressure must be actively high, so he has to be fighting or running a marathon.
In all that other bogus that follows you state that speeding up the heart rate will result in a minor heart atack. Please do some research on what actually causes heart atacks..
A. Oxygen does NOT result in faster heart rate.
B. An increased oxygen level might actually prevent heart atacks, dunno if that's what you stated, your sentence was a bit messy.
C. You will not increase blood presure by inducing tissue swelling. You'd have to squeeze an artery to stop its bloodflow and even doing so you'll do a very shitty job on rising the bloodpressure.
You'll only get a heart atack if you manage to cut off the oxygen supply to the heart. If you actually mannage this due to blocking the stream of blood towards the heartarteries, you'll have to keep doing this for over !!30!! minutes for the heart to obtain ischaemic damage resulting in necrosis of the tissue. If you unblock this stream of blood sooner your victim will feel fine and 'll have no damage at all. Maybe feel a bit woozy.
What might be possible to do is cause irregular heart rythm but you'll probably have to bring in heavy blows to the chest and pretty surely not this method. I'm looking forward on a video of your friend showing me how he performs this on a dog or cow or whatsoever..
