Default The "Offical" sneaking thread

Alot of things discussed here may require a ceartian amount of 'sneaking', ie going where you arent ment to go without being seen or herd, so it only seems right to have a sneaking thread to disscuss ways of moving in; rural, urban, indoor or outdoor, day or night settings etc. without being seen or herd. Maby we can all learn something.
I wasnt shure if this should go here or in the physical activities section, but I put it here because it has obvious combat rellavince. If it is in the wrong place then the mods can please move it.
So please discuss techniques/ideas for moving unseen or herd here.

Ill start out:
When moving on a solid surface ie carpet, concrete, wooden flooring etc. it is often quietest to move by placing your heal down first then 'rolling' the outside of your foot down onto the floor in one fluid (but not too fast) movment. If you are doing this on an noiseyer surface then place your foot down then gently transfer you weight to your front foot. If you are in a house/staircase that may have creaky floorboards then it is best to keep to the walls where there is often more support under the floor so it is less likley to creak.
The important thing if you are starting out to do this is to be patent, and to practice lots, if you have pets, friends or family members then practice sneaking right up behind them without being noticed.

In terms of clothing, you need to choose somthing comfotable and (obvously) as quiet as possible. Choose somthing to blend in with youe environment, navy at night (black leaves to much of a sillowet), cammo in bush, or appropiate civialian clothing if you wish to 'hide in plain sight'. If you must use a torch at night then it is best to have one with a red filter because it preserves nightvision and can be harder to see at night.

Another important thing is to strech and warm up before you try to do any serous sneaking this will stop any joints clicking (my bloody ankel clicks with every step I take unless I warm up and sergury to fix it is too dangerous) so warming up is very important.

This is all I have time for.. hope this thread catches on.

Knifes are not the best weapons for silence. As people tend to scream like pigs when stabbed. Great guild, when in the bush the best way to move silently is to place your feet flat on the ground as you walk as it reduces to risk of snapping small bits of foliage on the ground.

Have you ever cut somethings throat? They can still scream and make noise (i.e banging their hands against something). Perhaps you are one of those people who think you can cut someone throat with the sharp edge sliding action. It can take up 1 min from someone to die from their throat being cut. And cutting "ear to ear" is dumb. If you are going to cut someone's throat cut cut it just below the hard bit of the wind pipe. This is where most of the major arteries are grouped.

I suspect you got this from some movie where the hero slits their throat and they fall down dead. The way the army does it is much different. From behind: The arm is placed under the neck. The back of the hand on the same arm is then pressed against the ear and the head is then bent in the same direction as the arm. The knife is then trust into the neck. Between the large neck mussel and the wind pipe. and just below the hard part of the wind pipe. The knife is then ripped out of the neck in the opposite direction to the knifeman. Once this is done the head should be forced backwards in order to make sure that the windpipe is open and the blood is flowing in.

Then perhaps you can enlighten me further, as your knowledge seems to be so much greater than that of NZ army trained soldiers who showed me how to do this?

Great!

Now back back on topic. Does any one have any advice for moving across large areas quickly. I.e at a slow running pace?

If your trying to stay hidden stay low move across a tree line and in the shadows. You want to make sure your not blacklite (standout because of the colors behind you) or standing on the horizon. If it doesn't matter if people see you act like a jogger and jog in open area. Don't make yourself look like your about to throw a pipebomb though mr.johnsons window.

I was thinking more about an area that people would not be. I.e a construction site. Is black the best color to wear or is grey better?

I belive that the mariens where navy blue to prevent a sillowet, but grey should be fine depending on the shade that it is (to light and it stands out/reflects light, to dark and you have a sillowette) You would also want somthing that would break up yor bodyshape/sillowet.

I did find this though, but I dont know how true it is and I cant really imagine soilders running round in pink either:
"The US Airforce conducted extensive experiments for camouflage and dtermined that the best night camouflage color is pink!
Here's why: energy from the sun causes a molecule to vibrate at a frequency that we perceive as color. When the sun goes down, colors don't get dark, they fade to colorlessness. All that remains are the luminous colors at the edge of our ultraviolet visual perception. Pink appears to blend naturally into this "moonlight" effect by eliminating contrast and blending naturally into the background. Black actually stands out at night, particularly in the sky, on the ocean, or in the open. Total black only occurs where there is no light whatsoever, a rare occurance in nature and one where the color of your camo makes no difference at all because no one can see it anyway."

And well done on getting rid of that bullshitter Mitchell_Leary by the way, I was getting tired of his farfetched stories.

I don't know about pink, I've never even thought to try it, but I do know that black isn't the best. Try navy for the night and grey for like dusk/eary morning/lots of moonlight. They both work pretty much the same.
Also, bloodlusta, about walking in the woods; it's better to start with you heel and super slowly let your foot down. You can feel a stick (even through thick hunting boots) before it snaps 99% of the time. Your way is probably better if you're trying to move quickly, but I know that for just moving quietly in the woods, its best to do it the hunter's way (used for trying to make the deer not run away).

Take this with a grain of salt, I'm definetly no expert, but as far as I know, the best way to move quickly across a large area is to crouch run. It works, but you aren't invisible by any means. Just hit cover when you get a nice chance and check for anybody watching; of course that gives them more time to see you so maybe just running there is the best option...like I said, I'm no expert.

a maroon color is better than pink. something like a dark red would work too.
if its pitch black out black would be a better color to wear.

Sticking to the shadows works well. Nothing shiny is a good idea also.
How to train so you sneak in the woods:
Walk around trying not to make noise (in the day). Do this till you get good at it. Now you can try going faster. Just repeat till you can run with making little to no sound. If want you can have a friend chase you thru the woods then hide and listen to him make a big ruckus as he runs.

It workd for me.

Yea practice is good. When I used to have cats Id sneak up on them, and I sneak up on my dogs now. Most animals have more accute hearing than humans so it is good practice.

Yeah, maroon makes sense...and a pink shirt would be pretty embarassing when I'm sitting in jail.
But anyhow, practice is always a good idea no matter what you're doing. If you want real practice though (and if any of you live in the sticks you'll know) try to sneak up on a deer or a coon or a turkey or a -insert wild animal here-. Dogs and cats are a good start, but trying to sneak up on something that uses its ability to detect stuff sneaking up on it to save its life is a whole different ball game.

not really just be downwind from the animal. I doubt it would smell you unless you got really close.
if someone sneaking up on your while your walking around you can ether, double back and see if anyone stops or changes directions suddenly, run around a corner and wait for them to come, or just start running.
If your in the woods or a nonpublic place heres what you do. Every so often stop and look behind you. You have to stop and look behind you as quick as you can. maybe even start running to the sound of the person following you. If you lucky the person will ether not stop when you do so you can hear them, or get scared and run away if you run after them. Another thing you can do if your in the woods and close to a field. Run into the field suddenly then ether plunge into the woods someone and wait for him to come, Or if a part of the woods branches out into the field. Run behind that then go into the woods. Most likely the person thats following you is going to stay in the woods. This is to your advantage as he is making more noise making over sticks leaves and shit. Watch the field as well as the woods the person could come from ether way.

It can't change that quickly. When im hunting i always try to enter the bush with the wind in my face. However with people wind isn't that important (unless you really stink)

The first threads don't make much sense but I know for a fact that nobody is going to scream with their throat cut properly. If you don't believe me then join the Marines and be trained corrctly. I' not going to explain it here because too many kids read these threads.

gfto ML.
kids? lol if thats what your worried about gfto again.
you sound like ML.
if someone cut my throat id still be able to make a noise because your windpipe is still intacked. Maybe you believe from movies you can cut half of someones throat with a single knife slice. Which is wrong. The reason why you plunge a knife into someones neck like bloodlusta explained to let blood flow into there windpipe.

What has slicing peoples throats got to do with sneaking through a forest?
Have I missed something?

Being able to take out people quickly and quietly is an important part of moving unseen.

Hey Michail_Lerary! Could you be any more blatant? Also the NZ army is rank above the US Marines and below the British Marines when it comes to training. Referring to them like that shows stupidity.

Nope. NZ has such a small army that they are trained as semi special forces. We have about 1 training staff for every 5 soldier apparently. An example of this can be found in Afghanistan. Mission that are deemed to hard for the US Marines are given over to NZ and AUS troops because of our higher level of training. It is a lot like comparing US troops to the Chinese, they have lots more and because of that they have less training.

LOL the only issue is that it is really small (11,000 combat). However they are some of the best "sneakers" around. The best exercise to practice sneaking is spotlight. I assume you all know the rules?
