-- Posted by ilovekayla on 9:44 pm on Feb. 4, 2002 Does anyone know what this is??? Does anyone know how to puirify it...? its the stuff that surrounds the battery acid.....
-- Posted by balor on 3:12 pm on Feb. 5, 2002 Well Manganese dioxide is in big 1.5volt batteries. Its black so I presume were talking about the same thing. As far as I know the only use it has is as a catalyst in chemical reactions, but nothing particularly useful if youre not into chemistry. It doesnt explode or anything.
-- Posted by ilovekayla on 10:53 pm on Feb. 5, 2002 well some ass hole told me that it would burn so i ook apart about 100 batterys so i have like 50 pounds of the shit!
-- Posted by balor on 2:43 pm on Feb. 6, 2002 Well if you use it as a catalyst for something only a tiny amount is used so you will have that 50 pounds for a long time yet!LOL
-- Posted by Just0nePepsi on 4:29 pm on Feb. 6, 2002 I burned it all it did was smell funny and make like a little spark and that was about. I got it outta a AA battery. Not too much fun. Try drinking the acid it might prove to be fun lol just kidding
-- Posted by ilovekayla on 5:56 pm on Feb. 6, 2002 damnit! lol

if you read one of fourms it says you can make a bomb out of this stuff somthing about putting it in a bottle (plastic) ad then filling the bottle up with hydrogen proroxside that stuff that cleans cuts in the bottle
-- Posted by scott587 on 6:18 pm on Mar. 6, 2002 its in the explosives section the last time a saw it

That black shit in carbon-zink batteries is an oxygen source to react with hydrogen bubbles that would form around the center electrode ( a carbon rod ). With out the black stuff, the bubbles would coat the carbon rod after a bit of use and the out put of the battery would go down. Oxygen from the black stuff reacts with the hydrogen to form water. Contrary to what many people have been misinformed, this type of battery does not contain an acid, instead it contains Ammonium Chloride ( chemically speaking it is a salt ) to eat up the zink shell. This chemical is used in some table salt substitutes ( one brand name is CO-Salt ), also used in some soldering fluxes and cough medicine.
-- Posted by Cerebral Rapist on 10:41 pm on Mar. 14, 2002 I used to play around with it when I was younger, I'd put it in a small plastic container and just add peroxide to it, it makes a cool looking smoking/bubbling effect and it heats the container.
