Seriously though, it's so hard to write a virus in anything other that the high level languages in new computer applications (hidden in Word and IE) that people don't bother anymore. I'm writing an operating system for a 68HC11, along with some software to control a small robot using coodinates. It's all in machine code at the moment. I am having problems getting a HC11 C compiler (IAR) to generate downloadable code, which I need for floating point maths. Do you have any direct experiance with using C compilers with the HC11? I used it as the main processor to control an automatic electric guitar tuner, using a TI DSP as a filtering coprocessor.  I got sick of writing in assembly, so I forked out about $200 for a commercial C compiler... let's see if I can find it. Here it is: I used ICC1 version 5, from ImageCraft.  It was a *little* bit flaky... I remember I got it to barf and emit some total nonsense to the assembler and got a bug patch from them for it; I don't know if they're still around or not.  What exactly are you having a problem with?  When you say downloadable code, I assume you're using an EVM or EVB; I built custom HW for my project for space reasons, and just burned my object code onto a flash device, but I also have an EVM for the A1 so I'm familiar with the download procedure.  Typically, your linker is configurable as to where things get located, and they're usually somewhat flexible about output format (not familiar with IAR).  The Motorola EVM boards expect Motorola S-record format, which is an ASCII protocol with some moderately effective error correction dispersed throughout the file to prevent corruption during download.  What exactly are you running into? After a day of juggling around and editing around 35 different files and 32767 (! may as well be) different command switches, not to mention the bloody linker and library editor - I finally got the damn thing to download useable code. Which is fucking excellent since I've been meaning to get the C going for weeks. This HC11 is a good microcontroller! Shame it's got a normal instruction set though, cos I'm used to programming an ARM processor. I have basically written a complete OS in code for the processor - a command line over the RS232 port. You can debug and everything and I am well proud! Nice modular design and everything. I got a bit carried away and forgot the rest of the project, but, hopefully, development will (and is) around 4 times as fast as normal. In fact, completion will be sometime soon. The project is a small robot that has crap motors and two tachometers (y'know very crude mouse wheel type!) and has to be able to move in a precision like manner to coordinates etc.. And yes, slow processors aren't suited for 'rubbish motor' control! But that's what I've got to play with! All position information is derived from the tachometer pulses. This does require loads of calculation and at the moment I'm implementing loads of lookup tables. The whole system is essentially working - it just needs speeding up and calibrating. Since the robot knows where it is, no matter what the motors are doing, fine motor control isn't the main problem. If so, you save it to a disk as A:\autoexec.bat and then put the disk in the school computer and type  "A:\" to get into the floppy drive prompt then type "COPY A:\filename.bat C:\autoexec.bat" with filename.bat being the name of the virus batch file.  This will copy the file to the computer.  If it asks you to over-write,  type y or whatever to get it to over write.  Now, after the computer says "1 file(s) copied" or somthing like that, restart the computer. Your right though you have to know what you doing with it. It's not GUI like windows except if you use x-windows or somthing like that. But there is alot more useablity with it.
