-- Posted by pyrotech on 6:30 pm on Mar. 7, 2002 I have been reading up on making hydrogen by using Hydro Chloric acid and aluminum foil or magnesium. I was wondering whether or not different metals like Al or Mg will react better and release more hydrogen. Also does anyone that knows alot about chemistry have any clue what the molarity of muriatic acid is. From what I have found muriatic acid is dilute HCl but how dilute is it and will it work for this application. Any ideas for creating hydrogen in mass amounts for quick manufacture of hindenberg ballons would be apreciated.
-- Posted by Pyroclasm on 6:53 pm on Mar. 7, 2002 i think magnesium is probably one of the best from the shit weve done at school for producin hydrogen, there are better ones but i think there harder to come by, like sodium and francium i think.

muriatic acid is HCl in water. i'm not that familiar the term muriatic acid but if it's the kind of hydrocloric acid you can buy at stores it's usually at around 25% pure...
-- Posted by drybilgeltd on 3:02 pm on Mar. 8, 2002 I looked the word muriatic up in my Websters dictionary a bunch of years ago, it ment derived from the sea. Sea water has lots of NaCl in it. Pass electricity through it and chlorine gas is givin off. Mix the chlorine with water and after several chemical reactions take place HCl is formed ( note: HCl is a gas also ). Large commercial swimming pools chlorinate the water by mixing chlorine gas from large pressureized cylinders into the water ( first reaction with water forms HCl and HClO ( Hypochlorus acid ) ( second reaction the oxygen from some of the HClO combines with bad stuff in the water leaving HCl behind ). The result of this is the PH of the water will go down to irritating levels if not treated with a chemical to bring it back up. This word muriatic is just some laymans term for something he doesn't know jack shit about. Strongest HCl that I have used came from hardware stores and is about 35%. The label on the side in small print said Hydrochloric Acid. The big label on the front said Muriatic Acid. If iron bolts, sheets or other shape is dumped is the acid you can get hydrogen gas. You might be better off passing DC electricity through sodium hydroxide disolved in water to make hydrogen. One electrode will have hydrogen bubbles forming and the other electrode will have oxygen bubbles. It is done this way on submarines to get oxygen for the crew to breath. Put a upside down glass tube over the electrodes for the gasses to collect in.

The auctual MOLERITY of HCl is 12 moles. This is twice the max i can jack from the lab at school. This is strong shit and that is the reason the measurement chart on the side says like 2 tblespoons for a 20,000 gallon pool.

-- Posted by Lord Storm on 11:54 am on Mar. 14, 2002 ah, making hydrogen, we did that in one of my science classes in which we made oxygen and hydrogen to propel homemade rockets (fun day that was) the purest HCL I have used was 65%, me and some friends stole it from the chem lab (HEY! it was just sittin out ok) to burn through an intake vent (yippee).
-- Posted by DrD525 on 12:40 pm on Mar. 14, 2002 Any metal in any acid will make hydrogen. I've had good results with Drano (Ghetto dollar kind) and aluminium.
-- Posted by Zambosan on 1:02 pm on Mar. 14, 2002 Drano is not an acid, it's a base.

-- Posted by ilovekayla on 6:14 pm on Mar. 14, 2002 i woudlent start with zam hes a smart fuck... hes the smartest one on this site.. so your wrong lol... but copper is a metal corret... now you put draino in your drain and it doesent spay hydrogen out of the drain now does it/???
-- Posted by LordPyro on 6:34 pm on Mar. 14, 2002 Actually Drano is an acid, or has acid in it. Put it on ur hand and see what happens. And I don't think it has lye in it either...
-- Posted by Zambosan on 8:59 am on Mar. 15, 2002
Drano contains sodium hydroxide, aka caustic soda, aka lye. KOH ... notice the hydroxide (OH) ion??? It's a strong base, and a base will give you chemical burns very similar to those of an acid. Try dipping some pH paper into some... you'll find it reads about 13.3. pH of 7 is neutral, anything above below is acidic, anything below is neutral. Need more proof or don't have pH or litmus paper? Try mixing it with an acid, vinegar (acetic) will do. Reacts pretty well, doesn't it? It's called titration, the reaction of an acid and a base. Say it with me, tie-tray-shun. Still not satisfied? Make some phenopthalein solution out of Ex-lax and isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. It'll take some time to dissolve. Phenopthalein is a weak carboxylic acid that turns bright red (or pink) in the presence of a base; a base molecule will pull the acidic proton off, forming a phenopthalate ion. This ion's electron structure is such that it begins to absorb wavelengths at the top of the visible electromagnetic spectrum, giving it a red color. Drop some into drano... turns pretty red, doesn't it?
-- Posted by hippie john on 3:45 pm on Mar. 17, 2002 go and look at the begining of the compressed hydrogen bomb topic. it shows how to get hydrogen from water.
