-- Posted by ilovekayla on 6:01 pm on Feb. 2, 2002 I'm a begginer so bear with me... I know that it can be used to make smoke bombs and fuses but what else can it be used for?
-- Posted by Hergor on 8:22 pm on Feb. 2, 2002
usually potassium nitrate is used for making anything that can be vaguely described as 'blackpowder'

thanks
-- Posted by The Great Milenko on 10:03 pm on Feb. 2, 2002 Your really testing my patience with making new threads on such kewl matters but since you are indeed a newb i will bear with you, potassium nitrate, aka: salt petre and KN03 is used for a whole multitude of things, like making nitric acid, and as hergor said blackpowder, but instead of asking what it is used for, why not just read some recipes and such to find out!
-- Posted by ilovekayla on 12:15 am on Feb. 3, 2002 Im sorry man... I dont know i really like the site and what its used for.... so ill try to cut down... once again im sorry..

gees man, get a spine. stand by what u say or don't say it at all.
-- Posted by Zambosan on 3:20 pm on Feb. 4, 2002 Yep.. eat too much KNO3, and the nitrate will reduce to nitrite in your gut. It will then be happily absorbed into your bloodstream, and bind quite permanently to the hemoglobin in your blood cells, rendering them incapable of carrying oxygen anymore. The condition is called methaemoglobinemia, and is common in third world countries where the water supply is contaminated or where the geniuses use saltpeter as a substitute for salt in food. Pretty similar to cyanide poisoning (cyanosis) although a lot more nitrate is needed than CN to get you sick.
-- Posted by dellexo on 1:52 pm on Feb. 9, 2002 It is also used for curing meat, ham, bacon etc.Might be worth looking at places that cure meat. You might be able to blag some out of them, just say you are into home curing might work.
-- Posted by Hergor on 2:14 pm on Feb. 9, 2002
used for curing meat? didn't we say above that it is poisonous?
-- Posted by dellexo on 2:38 pm on Feb. 9, 2002 It is used in small doses, look on the side of a pack of ham/bacon and deppending on the brand it will normaly contain pottasium/sodium nitrate saying that, some brands use the nitrite instead which is no good.Sorry i can't elaborate any further but not being a home curing expert,my knowledge on the subject is now exhausted;)
-- Posted by jmb1125 on 7:08 pm on Feb. 18, 2002 dellexo, u r rite. "brine" used for curing, and pickling.

HEY! we got to help newbies cause some of us forget that we were once newbies too! Anyways, your disrespecting one of the most useful chemicals. KNO3 can be the base for all the explosives you will ever need. But my fact is that "salt peter" is rarely available any more. Look for "Stump Remover" in the garden department of a hard ware store. It's mostly KNO3. Mix 2 parts stump remover with 1 part sugar and heat until sugar melts, then shovel ur mixture into something flamable, like a papertowel roll and stick a fuse in it. Lite it and run, it burns like a roadflare with lots a smoke.
