HOW TO MAKE PURE SODIUM:
-- Posted by Zambosan on 1:00 pm on Mar. 8, 2002 Good luck. NaCl melts at over 1400 degrees F (over 800 C)... much higher than most electrodes.
-- Posted by Boosa on 1:28 pm on Mar. 8, 2002
Ohh FUCK!!!
-- Posted by Zambosan on 4:40 pm on Mar. 8, 2002 No.
-- Posted by AbSoLuTeZeRo on 6:49 pm on Mar. 8, 2002 making that is a waste of time!!! steal it!!!
-- Posted by zack2482 on 12:10 am on Mar. 9, 2002 what about mapp gas could that get that hot
-- Posted by deinstein16 on 3:17 am on Mar. 9, 2002 i don't seem the point of extracting it.It is Vey dangerous plus you can easily get it from the school!!!I have bought a lot of sodium fro a store that i have found and i have made some good stuff. But be carefull it must be kept in a bottle with oil i think, coz it reacts with the air!!!
-- Posted by Boosa on 11:05 am on Mar. 9, 2002
I cant steel it from my savhool...it is in a nother building and there is a FUCKING GOOD security...(though I'm ging to find out wherer the school get this shit)
-- Posted by vegeta11 on 10:33 pm on Mar. 9, 2002 Dude. Ok I am new here i case u wondering. Anyway I am lke a science wiz I know almost every atoms and info by memorization anyway Where are yu getting that sodium will react with air? Even if it does just keep it cool see things react at cerain heats if kept cool enough it wont do shit. besides i have seen fottage of people cutting sodium in room temperature conditions since it is one of the weakest metals there is it can be cut with a butter knife. So wouldnt really worry about it reacting in air anyway if you want to get some there are millions upon millions of websits out there for chemical supplies. Just buy it and have it shpped. For all they know ur teaching a class something.
-- Posted by Zambosan on 4:50 pm on Mar. 11, 2002 Okay there, "science wiz". If you cut a block of sodium, the exposed surface will oxidize & cloud over extremely quickly even in very dry air. In humid conditions, it can get hot enough to burn the surface it's on. deinstein16 is right that it's stored under mineral oil to keep it away from water, although he's never bought "a lot" of sodium, or "made some good stuff" with it, since he'd *know* that it's kept immersed in oil, not *think* so.

zams right but what kind of electricty do you have to run threw it because i want to
-- Posted by Zambosan on 11:03 am on Mar. 13, 2002 As I posted in another thread, NaCl has a melting point of 801 degrees celsius; that's 1061 degrees farenheit. You can get that high with a propane or Mapp gas flame, but it'd be difficult to keep it melted evenly without boiling it. Also, you'd need to use high-temperature electrodes (graphite?). I don't know the bulk resistance of molten NaCl, but you'd need to find that out & using that plus the electrode spacing you plan to use to determine whether you need a series resistor to prevent excess current draw out of your power source.
-- Posted by preditor on 11:27 pm on Mar. 13, 2002 I thought sodium was kept in kerosine? or is that potassium or something (and I know that kerosine is an oil by product so don't evan say it) and for the effort and danger I don't think reclaiming sodium from salt is safe, Just my opinion
-- Posted by Zambosan on 8:37 am on Mar. 14, 2002 Preditor: actually, I think it usually is kerosene. But it can be any heavy oil that isn't reactive, as long as it displaces any water & isn't hygroscopic. And you're right, this is pretty dangerous no matter how you slice it. The main problem is that sodium will ignite in air at temps over 170 degrees C... so you'd have to perform this electrolysis in an inert atmosphere.
-- Posted by AbSoLuTeZeRo on 9:08 am on Mar. 14, 2002 dosent sodium lite on fire or something when you put water on it
-- Posted by preditor on 12:09 am on Mar. 15, 2002 Zambosan, honestly, if you tried this the way it was laid out would you die? and AbSoLuTeZeRo the answer to your question is in this thread, read it before you post in it
-- Posted by Zambosan on 9:28 am on Mar. 15, 2002 Well, you wouldn't die if you weren't anywhere near it. :) But yeah, it's impractical and dangerous. I wouldn't do it for all the rice wine in china.

hay....10x 4 all this info - u c the reason I put this thread was to find out anyother way to get it cuz where I live (it is ISRAEL) I cant find any pure potessium or sodium...:( - or even potesuim nitrate...(not even as salt peter and not as the stup remover... - cuz I dunno the name of it in hebrew...and I coudnt find any ingridians that has any k3no there...), and I cant also steal it from scholl cuz even if I make it - it wont last for long (the quantety) so I will ghave to go and take some more - and mor and finally I will get busted...so I need some other way to find it - and 10x 4 any1 who is helpin' here :)
-- Posted by headcase on 3:09 pm on Mar. 15, 2002 Isn't that grey stuff on sparklers potassium nitrate?
-- Posted by Boosa on 8:31 am on Mar. 16, 2002
anyway - b.cuz I have no Idia how else can I findpotessium nitrate - can any1 plz help me with that- (how to Xtract it or any other way - not stealing from school - it is not posiable - and there is no "salt petr, or or anything like "stup remover" so plz help me....)
-- Posted by deathweasle on 10:25 am on Mar. 16, 2002 pure sodium huh, not that i care if you die or anything but i would not dick with the stuff and chemical engineering is what i went to collage for, its dangerous as hell, if it hits a certain temperature, what happens is, it becomes completly reactive to anything that has salt in it, hense the reason you can hold it, or set it on the table, or put it in water expesially. after it hits that temp, its stays in its crystaline form untill force into a chemical imbalence, it sences the salt and the two elements fuckin dupe it out, the only left space in the partical is not taked up by the salt ion but fighting off the atom causes the extremely harsh reactions....burnung things, catching on fire when bombarded with he trillians of salt minerals, it fights off the salt because its kinda like a ressesive trait, it has no use and therefor rejects it creating the chemical reaction. so no matter what, that shit is dangerous ..leave it alone, there is no gaurentees that what you mix it with to make your toy will be excepted and even if it normally would you would have no make it in a certain temperatur controlled area or ...."kaboom" a flaming inferno.
