I do not need alot, and do not want to have to buy a whole tank of acetyline. -- Posted by Zambosan on 4:21 pm on Mar. 13, 2002 Pure water reacted with pure calcium carbide will produce only acetylene and calcium hydroxide.  Any impurities are the result of impurities in the precursors: CaC2 + 2H2O  -->  Ca(OH)2 + C2H2 Buying a small tank of acetylene may be the more economical alternative for you; the minimum order most places will ship is 12 lbs of carbide, costing around $60.  The DOT's HAZMAT regulations require so many safety precautions that over $40 of the cost goes into preparing the package for shipping.
