The spud gun works on the same principles that your car's engine works. When the cannon is loaded a finite amount of fuel is confined to a finite amount of space. When you ignite it the fuel excites and combusts. Due to the chemical reaction gasses build up in the chamber. As gasses expand they increase pressure in the chamber. The increased pressure will cause the potato to shoot out of the barrel because the potato is the only part that will move. Who knew spun gun science could be this much fun?
