Hey all I looked on the arcive and still can’t find it HOW DO YOU MAKE ELECLTRO MAGNETS???? 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

take an iron core (any massive iron bar). wrap thin wire around (remember to put as tight together as possible – several layers for better results).
there you go…
when a current flows through the wire it will induce an electromagnetic field on the iron core and thus turning it into a magnet.
(not really 100% iron works best for the core – in case you want to stop the magnetic field very fast)

If you’re using power supplies to power the thing, um.. don’t. A great big inductor like that will remove your power transistor(s) even if they’ve got loads of diode protection!
Bring the voltage up and down slowly and watch the current!!!
Or use a car battery – but make sure there’s enough turns or it’ll melt your hands off! Probably best not to use a car battery…

car batteries aren’t that bad. just make sure you use wires with heat resistant insulation.
like ActionTimedDeath said using many turns is always good and a few pre-resistors never do any harm… 🙂

…nice big chunky ceramic power resistors, preferably. 🙂 You *might* be able to add a workable snubber diode external to the power supply… one with adequate load handling capability and a fast enough switching time (two diametrically opposed requirements, I know…) To really ensure you’ve got enough protection, you’ll need to calculate the inductance of your coil, which isn’t trivial… depends heavily on how precisely you’ve wrapped your turns and what material you’ve used for the core.

to make an electrical magnitic you put copper there other is a “THING”
