Making meth is hotly discussed in many recreational drugs forums. It seems with every contributer to the discussion of meth, comes a different method, differing measurements and differing results.
This poses a huge problem for anyone trying to source accurate information on how methamphetamine is made, and learn about the chemicals used in its manufacture.
Different Reactions to Synthesize Methamphetamine
It is very important to understand that there are a number of different reactions which are performed to produce methamphetamine. Of the various syntheses only two are applicable to home chemists, utilizing easily available ephedrine or pseudoephedrine as a precursor.
- Reduction With Hydroiodic Acid and Red Phosphorus
- Lithium-Ammonia Reduction of Ephedrine to Methamphetamine
There are many more safely scalable industrial methods used to produce the drug, that are simply not practical for the home chemist.
Most Syntheses Are Based On These Methods..
Almost all the syntheses available online are based on either of the above reactions. Through years of clandestine manufacture, amounts, times and substitute chemicals have been tweaked and refined. The problem is that many who know little or nothing about the chemistry of the syntheses share their discoveries. Many speculate, without having ever even bared witness to the procedure. Formulas are further adjusted and copied through different forums, blogs and websites, leading to a complete breakdown of the authenticity of the information presented – and providing formulas that can only end up in failure, explosion, or both.
Lithium-Ammonia Reduction
The Lithium-Ammonia Reduction is a method derived from a reaction called “The Birch Reduction“. This method involves the use of Anhydrous Ammonia, a particularly nasty chemical, mixed with lithium. Various solvents and sodium hydroxide are used in this method. Commonly referred to as “The nazi method”, in reference to the german soldiers that reportedly manufactured it for their own use during WWII, when military supplies were not forthcoming. “One pot method”, or “Shake and bake” methods are derivatives of the original formula, using ammonium nitrate in place of anhydrous ammonia. This method produces a crystal with less impurities than syntheses utilizing red phosphorus, as well as being higher yeilding.
Hydroiodic Acid/Red Phosphorus Method
The Hydroiodic Acid/Red Phosphorus Method (and derivatives) is often referred to as “the matchbook method”, in reference to matchbooks being the source of red phosphorus in this reaction. This reaction utilizes sodium hydroxide (lye), iodine, and red phosphorus to produce methamphetamine.
Never Without Inherent Risks..
We hear it everywhere, about the toxification of locations where meth is produced, explosions, poisoning, burns and more. That’s not all, over 8600 meth labs were busted in the US in 2009 (DEA).
It is very important to understand, the chemicals used to make this drug by either of the most popular clandestine formulas need to be handled by individuals with formal training in handling these chemicals. If not formal training, then the upmost care to follow the procedures used by professionals must be used. All to often careless “cooks” sloshing around substandard containers, often under pressure, pay for their carelessness.
Both the above procedures involve reactions that will explode when exposed to air, and/or other chemicals, even water. These explosions can be a small fireball, through to an explosion likely to blow a hole in the closest wall. Explosions can send shards of glass, burning plastic and acids, flammable solvents and flesh eating anhydrous ammonia in all directions, seriously maiming or killing everyone present.
That being said, when procedures are followed to a standard taught at a formal training level, meth can and is produced under relatively “safe” conditions. Most of the photos published depicting meth lab explosions show all to clearly the mess, clutter and substandard conditions it was being produced under. It’s no wonder the result shown occured.
The Chemistry Must Be Understood..
You’re not going to be able to safely make meth. period. Despite what you may have read on this forum or that, a cook can’t just “throw” their “ingredients” into a container and have a “half time joint” (as I’ve read). If they do they’ll most likely end up in one of the photos described above.
There is good information out there, however. To completely understand how methamphetamaine is synthesized, one needs to read and understand the chemistry of the synthesis, understand the nature of the chemicals being used, and understand how the exact process is performed. This includes precise measurements, times, purification of chemicals and more.

Its an interesting battle to watch. With effective cold medications being pulled from shelves, chemicals being restricted, explosions, contamination of land and buildings, billions being poured into law enforcement, hospitalization and addiction treatment, where is it all heading? Meth makes money, lots of money, it is also highly addictive. These two, inter-reliant factors alone have spun meth out of control.

you’re distorting the brain permanently.So then we started with REAL hallucinations the kind where you can look at a tree and watch people talking or laughing for hours.
When I took alot of acid I wasn’t paranoid of people,bushes ,trees,walls inanimate opbjects that seemed alivw freaked me out.

and a motel room,food etc, I had a sign that said “Homeless God Bless Please help” or was it “Homeless please help God Bless” either way not much money,maybe 20 30 a day at most,but I learned how to make a twentyrock last the whole afternoon,didn’t smoke it in one hit like some morons.Then you can tweak for two three hours smoking bread crumbs
or anything white.200 Mg. of Seroquel and off to beddybye wake up tommorrow do it all over again,wasn’t so bad atall.
So I had to quit crack ,and since then just good old alcohol,my6
first drug,and the one I always get busted with.
